The session, led by Sharee Daniel, Risk Management SME at RLDatix, and supported by Ceinwen Lawrence,&nbsp;Clinical Governance \u2013 Hospitals, Calvary&nbsp;Health, focused on fostering a culture of open communication in aged care organisations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a&nbsp;full room of delegates&nbsp;keen on improving their organisational culture, the session explored three key questions that address open disclosure, staff engagement in reporting, and continuous improvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Here are the questions and some key takeaways from across the sessions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 1:&nbsp;What are you doing to foster a culture of open disclosure and communication?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants agreed that&nbsp;establishing&nbsp;a culture of transparency and psychological safety is crucial for open disclosure. Some key takeaways included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quality of disclosure and transparency: Organisations must prioritise clear, honest communication.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building a safe culture: Ensuring that the workforce feels both safe and supported encourages openness.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focusing on psychological safety: Employees need to trust that they\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0face negative consequences for being transparent.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using specific scripts and scenarios: Staff\u00a0benefit\u00a0from training on apologising and managing disclosure situations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leadership\u2019s role: The journey begins with the board and senior leadership, setting the tone for openness.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsibility is collective: Everyone in the organisation\u00a0is responsible for\u00a0fostering a culture of transparency and for sharing positive outcomes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 2:&nbsp;Often, staff&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;see the value of reporting. How do you overcome this barrier?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The group discussed how to make reporting meaningful for staff, especially when time is limited. Key insights included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Official rostering time: Allocating 15 minutes for staff to report incidents shows that reporting is valued.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ease of reporting through technology: Streamlining\u00a0incident\u00a0reporting via\u00a0intuitive\u00a0apps, with prompts before staff finish shifts, removes barriers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclusive investigative processes: Involving staff\u00a0reporting\u00a0incidents\u00a0in the investigative process ensures they see the value and impact of reporting.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clarifying reporting as a process: Staff need reassurance that reporting leads to positive outcomes, not just paperwork.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using data to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0impact: Quantitative data can show improvements resulting from reporting, reinforcing its importance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Question 3:&nbsp;How do you ensure\/promote a culture of continuous improvement?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants agreed that fostering continuous improvement requires moving beyond compliance and adopting innovative, proactive approaches. Suggestions included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Embedding a learning culture: Organisations must encourage staff to view incidents as opportunities for learning,\u00a0and\u00a0not blame.
