{"id":8583,"date":"2024-11-05T09:41:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T08:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rldatix.com\/en-mea\/?p=8583"},"modified":"2026-07-31T14:08:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T13:08:27","slug":"adventhealth-reduced-falls-by-80-with-scalable-data-driven-bootcamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rldatix.com\/en-mea\/resources\/adventhealth-reduced-falls-by-80-with-scalable-data-driven-bootcamp\/","title":{"rendered":"AdventHealth Reduced Falls by 80% With Scalable, Data-Driven Bootcamp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM) awarded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrm.org\/innovation-award\">2024 Innovation Award, sponsored by RLDatix<\/a>, to AdventHealth Dade City and AdventHealth Zephyrhills, for their work in reducing patient fall rates and creating culture change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really had tried everything,\u201d said Peggy, the Director of Risk Management at AdventHealth. \u201cLike most hospitals \u2014 trying one thing after another and just nothing seemed to really have traction.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peggy started delving deep into patient safety organization assessments to explore new methods of vulnerability detection. It encouraged her to analyze their event data closer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1011136102?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" title=\"AdventHealth Reduced Falls by 80% With Scalable, Data-Driven Bootcamp\"><\/iframe><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Predictive Modeling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Her team began gathering and analyzing data trends in summer 2022. Among many insights, they discovered:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most patients with falls were admitted 24-48 hours prior\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most patients with falls usually scored in the high category on their risk scale\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most falls occurred on Tuesdays and Fridays\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>50+% falls were associated with restroom use\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They modeled these insights to determine their highest-risk patients. On Tuesdays and Fridays, they connected with nurse managers to identity the three highest-risk patients, sharing their names, room numbers and reasonings. It has become a daily task at their leadership safety huddles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within four months, their falls decreased by nearly 10%. \u201cWe thought we could do better,\u201d said Peggy. \u201cSo the idea of a bootcamp was born.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovative Healthcare Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a high-intensity model.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They held their first bootcamp in January 2023, exclusively for inpatient nurse managers and assistant nurse managers. The three-hour session featured four activity-based components:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fall risk scale model\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nurse-patient communication\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gait belts\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobilizing patients\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sky was the limit. Truly the goal was zero harm. We weren\u2019t sure if that was fully realistic, but we wanted to get as close as possible. Bootcamps are a different kind of education. In the hospital, we\u2019re used to watching a video and then clicking ten questions and answering them \u2026 Sometimes we\u2019ll attend an in-person class, but it\u2019s all theoretical or just talking about safety standards. It\u2019s informational. We wanted to add the active component.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bootcamp concluded with goal-setting and takeaway plans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhether it\u2019s fitness or military for six weeks, there\u2019s always intense focus and there\u2019s always a relentless pursuit for excellence and there\u2019s a goal that is challenging. If it were easy, it wouldn\u2019t be a bootcamp, so we wanted to incorporate all of those aspects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data-Driven Healthcare Decision-Making<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPredictive modeling helped us become mindful of fall risks on a daily basis \u2026 The more data you can accumulate to help you predict, your target focus will be even better.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peggy knew she needed to sustain the new enthusiasm and momentum before the next bootcamp. They followed with educational videos and created an employee role who would champion fall reduction.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/news\/headline\/2024-09-05-two-adventhealth-hospitals-receive-ashrm-2024-innovation-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Within four months, their falls were 50-80% lower than last year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They held a second bootcamp, for only direct care staff, joined by two moderators: Chair of Patient Falls Committee and Director of Special Projects. They already had a plan for each unit, so the moderators and Peggy only need to modify the agenda to add: building partnership skills for physical therapy. This second session led to their falls \u201cplummeting\u201d to an all-time low. For any subsequent inpatient unit increase, they implemented a three-day deep dive which has brought those respective rates back down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe closed 2023 with some amazing fall rates and truly had seen a culture change.&nbsp; What\u2019s even better is that 2024\u2019s rates are lower still.&nbsp; We are at the point where what we do every day \u2014 the comprehensive plan \u2014 has become a habit. It\u2019s just what we do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, they hold a bootcamp every six months, adding ancillary staff, including the environmental services (EVS) lab team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fostering a Culture of Data for Continuous Improvement and Zero Harm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data is what Peggy believed is the first step for healthcare leaders striving for similar results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStart with the foundation of predictive modeling with your trending data.&nbsp;Looking at hard numbers and comparing over time, analyzing and not just collecting, making a change based on what your analysis shows you&nbsp;\u2014 this helps get everyone on the same page and in the same mindset. Then with this as a solid foundation, move forward with holding a bootcamp.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She advised healthcare leaders to share insights at the team level, and then to turn these insights into actions that become ingrained routines.&nbsp;Peggy attributed the bootcamp\u2019s success to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrm.org\/education\/webinars\/reduce-your-patient-fall-rates-leveraging-bootcamp-approach\">culture change<\/a>, ownership and accountability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, after an 80% fall reduction, Peggy wants to do more with data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re only collecting what is obvious to us. I think there\u2019s a whole other layer of the less obvious that really could make an even bigger difference.
