{"id":5566,"date":"2025-06-16T06:45:48","date_gmt":"2025-06-15T23:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rldatix.com\/en-nam\/?p=5566"},"modified":"2026-04-07T20:14:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:14:41","slug":"in-conversation-with-2023-ashrm-president-rebecca-cady","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rldatix.com\/en-nam\/resources\/in-conversation-with-2023-ashrm-president-rebecca-cady\/","title":{"rendered":"In conversation with 2023 ASHRM President Rebecca Cady"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>During Palooza 2024, we sat down\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rebeccacady\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebecca Cady<\/a>, 2023 President of\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM<\/a>) and\u00a0VP \/ Chief Risk Officer\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrensnational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children\u2019s National Health System<\/a>, to ask her about front-line barriers,\u00a0enterprise\u00a0risk management and connected data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Removing barriers for the front line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a risk leader,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really imperative\u00a0for me to understand what really happens at the bedside and all the opportunities for silos to come up and miscommunications to happen, and uncertainties and the ways that people make errors are\u00a0very clear\u00a0to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1015716052?h=e3f8b8d52b&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcript:<\/strong> As a risk leader,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really imperative\u00a0for me to understand what really happens at the bedside and all the opportunities for silos to come up and miscommunications to happen, and uncertainties and the ways that people make errors are\u00a0very clear\u00a0to me, having been on the clinical end. And\u00a0essentially\u00a0I worked my way through law school as a nurse.\u00a0So\u00a0I saw that and then I continued to be able to\u00a0observe\u00a0these things as a lawyer, but\u00a0kind of still\u00a0through that clinician\u2019s lens.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u00a0these are the legal arguments, these are the legal impacts of what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0doing at the bedside, what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0putting in the chart, what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0saying to each other as care teams, and sometimes more importantly, what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not saying to each other. And pull that all together and really see the impact of all the\u00a0little things\u00a0that we do as clinicians that we\u00a0probably\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a good feel for what the global potential consequences of those things are.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because we\u2019re seeing only what\u2019s in front of us, the task at hand on a given day, whether you\u2019ve got to take a set of vital signs on a patient, or whether you\u2019re admitting a patient or whether you\u2019re getting a patient ready for surgery, you\u2019re focused on those things and rightfully, but it\u2019s important for folks who are doing those jobs to have an idea of the bigger picture and the impact of the care that they do.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on the other hand, as an administrator, if you don\u2019t have an acute awareness of what things are like on the front line, all the things that we\u2019ve been talking about, workplace violence, staffing challenges, challenges that people are having in their own lives, people have lives outside of their job clearly. And I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know that we necessarily think about that enough as administrators.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are we doing to really look at the whole employee and make sure that all the different administrative functions of the organization are focused on? What can we do to empower the front line to remove barriers to them providing the quality and safe care that they want to provide to our patients?\u00a0And really kind of looking at it through that lens.\u00a0Those are the things that I think are important about connecting the various disparate parts of healthcare and really having a global view of\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0our end goal and what is everybody\u2019s role in achieving that and how do we\u00a0eliminate\u00a0the barriers for the front end of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empowering the front line with connected data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1015717066?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcript:<\/strong> Every little piece of the puzzle matters. And if we don\u2019t have good data, if we don\u2019t have reliable data, if we don\u2019t have timely data and the right kind of data, we can\u2019t answer the important questions that we need to answer in order to be able to maximize the ability of the organization to fulfill its mission and provide safe and quality healthcare to patients. And\u00a0so\u00a0every little bit of that matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And whether you are inputting data or whether you are creating automated reports, whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0looking at how can we\u00a0optimize\u00a0the platform to turn out the kinds of things that we need it to, asking those questions of yourself daily about what is the bottom line on this? How does this contribute to the organization moving forward?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u00a0what is the bottom line on this? How can I, as an individual employee, contribute to moving the organization forward? And\u00a0in order to\u00a0be able to do that, you\u00a0have to\u00a0understand\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0our strategic plan, and\u00a0then more importantly,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0our role\u00a0in\u00a0it.\u00a0So\u00a0I look at that, that\u2019s leadership job to convey those messages down to the front line. This is our goal, and these are the ways in which your work can\u00a0impact\u00a0that goal, either positively or negatively.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u00a0for the leaders in the room, I would say if you\u00a0haven\u2019t\u00a0looked at your strategic plan recently, do that. Put some thought\u00a0to\u00a0it and figure out, okay, what is my department\u2019s role in this? The success of the organization with this thing? If we have a patient safety goal, what is it that we can do to move that ball forward?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then going out into the organization, doing rounds, being visible, meeting with the frontline staff. I find it\u00a0very powerful\u00a0for people who work in data to\u00a0go talk\u00a0to the frontline staff and the frontline managers.\u00a0So\u00a0the nursing unit managers, the medical unit directors, what kind of data do they need? Or they might help them to do a better job\u00a0to provide\u00a0quality care\u00a0and to provide\u00a0safe care. And\u00a0so\u00a0then you can take that back.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then the art of your job then is to figure out, well, I know what the\u00a0end product\u00a0is that people are looking for. How do I get the database to the point where it can give the front end of the stick, the pointy end of the stick, those frontline bedside staff the information that they need\u00a0in order to\u00a0be able to do these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enterprise risk management as a thought partner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1015718104?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcript:<\/strong> Risk management professionals have a unique sort of place in the organization in that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0not necessarily responsible for operations.\u00a0So\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not responsible\u00a0in\u00a0risk for making sure that patients get taken care of.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0not responsible for dropping the bills,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not responsible for ordering the supplies.\u00a0So\u00a0you\u00a0have the ability to\u00a0sort of be like Switzerland. You can be a neutral party that looks at things in the organization and can ask those questions as to how\u00a0might we\u00a0work together in a better way to manage the risks of the organization and to help make sure that the organization is successful in meeting the goals in its strategic plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its highest expression, risk management is about managing the risk to the organization. And by\u00a0what\u00a0I mean by that is the existential risks.\u00a0So\u00a0if we\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0execute on\u00a0our strategic plan,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not going to be around for\u00a0very long. So\u00a0patient\u00a0safety and quality are an important key part of enterprise risk management. And we can do that because we are looking at it from a\u00a035,000 foot\u00a0view.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0not looking at it at a\u00a05,000 foot\u00a0view.\u00a0So\u00a0we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0really have a dog in the fight, so to speak.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the\u00a0great thing\u00a0about that is that risk can position itself to be really a thought partner with other pieces of the business to talk to operational departments about how can we help you operations person do your job in a way\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0more efficient, more effective. And that helps us move the ball down the field in terms of meeting our strategic goals.\u00a0So having the ability to, and I really encourage risk teams, whether you\u2019re a chief risk officer or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a risk professional, I highly encourage people to\u00a0go have\u00a0a meeting with your IT security lead.\u00a0Go have\u00a0a meeting with your finance people,\u00a0go have\u00a0a meeting with\u00a0whoever\u2019s\u00a0in charge of patient billing, in charge of patient relations, or the ombudsman or all these different areas of the hospital or people that you should\u00a0go have\u00a0coffee with. Figure out what keeps them awake at night, what are the big scary problems that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0dealing with? And figure out how you as the risk department can help them manage those problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0take any money to do that.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just about time\u00a0and attention. And over time, if you start to develop those relationships, you may find that if\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0able to help somebody with a problem that they have, then maybe\u00a0they\u2019ll\u00a0start coming to you the next time they have another problem.\u00a0And then you can start to gather more information.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then it just becomes kind of like this virtuous cycle where you\u2019ve shown that you\u2019re not the department of no, that you\u2019re really there to be an internal subject matter expert, that you\u2019re there to sort of be the wind beneath everybody\u2019s sails and that you\u2019re helping people sort of lift up out of their operational details and really look at how is what they\u2019re doing impacting the overall organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0my belief, and\u00a0I think the data\u00a0supports it, that organizations that do that are much more successful, not only from a financial standpoint, but also in terms of their ability to provide safe and effective healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accurate, accessible, actionable data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1015718689?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcript:<\/strong> Executives are drowning in data.\u00a0There\u2019s almost too much data and too little of it is really actionable.\u00a0How do we make that better? Well, I think looking at beginning with the end in mind, as\u00a0I think it\u00a0was Stephen Covey used to say, right?\u00a0So\u00a0what are the things that executives are making decisions about on a daily basis? What are the key decisions? What are the key drivers of organizational success or failure? What data do we have in our potential data warehouse that can address those challenges and those decisions that need to be made?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then how do we make sure that\u00a0first of all, the data\u2019s\u00a0accurate?\u00a0Because if it\u2019s not, then that\u2019s going to cause a whole host of problems.\u00a0So\u00a0accurate\u00a0data that can be effectively pulled out in a way that provides actionable data.\u00a0So\u00a0it needs to be\u00a0accurate, it needs to be easy to find, and it needs to be actionable.\u00a0And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a challenge.\u00a0I think that everybody\u00a0struggles with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there are so many\u00a0different products\u00a0on the market that say they do one thing and\u00a0maybe they\u00a0do, but a lot of it is on how do you set that product up in your organization? Because if you have processes that are not effective to begin with, and you load those into a system, then you just have lousy processes that are now automated that you can never get away from.\u00a0So\u00a0in adopting platforms, you need to really look at what are your processes? Are they best in practice? Are they really designed to get you the answers that you need and make sure that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0spending the time on the front end to get the system set up to where\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to serve\u00a0you.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need better data. We need data at our fingertips. We need real-time data. And\u00a0so\u00a0making it on the front end, it should be easy to report. It needs to be safe to report, and it needs to make a difference. And\u00a0so\u00a0if we can get those three things in place and have staff reporting data that we need, then we can tackle the front end. Do we have the right kind of data? How do we pull things in from finance? How do we pull things in from patient statistics? How do we pull things in from our safety program? How do we pull things in from our HR and workers\u2019 comp program?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those things all\u00a0leveraged\u00a0together can make a profound impact in an organization, but it\u00a0has to\u00a0be done in a way\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0thoughtful.\u00a0And again, it\u00a0has to\u00a0be\u00a0accurate\u00a0and accessible and actionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investment from leadership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1015719465?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transcript:<\/strong> In general, from a change management standpoint, you\u00a0have to\u00a0make sure that you have all your stakeholders lined up to get ready and do it. And the organization needs to understand\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0the time commitment\u00a0going\u00a0to be\u00a0in order to\u00a0be able to do this, right? And I think that\u2019s where risk has an important voice to say,\u00a0&#8220;Hey, if\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to do this, if\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to spend the money on something, we need to make sure to do it right.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want the treadmill in the corner being\u00a0a very expensive, dirty laundry collector. If\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0buying the treadmill, we want to get on that treadmill and run, and it needs to work and it needs to do what we need it to do.\u00a0So\u00a0the risk, I think, has an ability to influence these processes by helping folks understand that investment on the front end is important.\u00a0And that\u2019s not just the investment of money, but it\u2019s the investment of time and attention and leadership.\u00a0Buy-in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0very important\u00a0for the tone from the top to be, this is what\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to do, this is the way we need to do it. It\u2019s going to take some time, but it\u2019s important for us to do it this way because the benefits of doing it this way will mean that we can fully utilize the platform, that we can ultimately make our work lives easier, that we can be bigger, stronger, faster, because we\u2019ve got this very product working for us so that we can work at the top of our licenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want\u00a0to have to have people doing tasks that\u00a0they\u2019re much\u00a0capable of doing much more.
