Every day, hospitals and health systems generate vast volumes of information, yet 97% of it goes unused, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2019\/12\/four-ways-data-is-improving-healthcare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Economic Forum<\/a>. While the potential of that data is enormous, its sheer scale creates a different kind of risk: complexity. And in healthcare, complexity can cost lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the ACHE 2025 Congress, a panel of healthcare leaders \u2014 including&nbsp;<strong>RLDatix CEO Dan Michelson&nbsp;<\/strong>and executives from Quest Diagnostics, Exact Sciences and Core Clinical Partners \u2014 explored how the right technologies can simplify healthcare and improve outcomes across the care continuum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The urgent need for simplicity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComplexity is the enemy, and simplicity is the solution,\u201d said Michelson. \u201cIt\u2019s simple \u2014 we have a big data problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s healthcare systems are overwhelmed not just by the volume of information, but by its fragmentation. The burden on clinical and administrative staff to manually connect data to draw insights continues to grow. The system is stressed and without smarter solutions, staff and patients alike are left to navigate the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key isn\u2019t just adopting more technology \u2014 it\u2019s investing in the right technology: solutions that streamline operations, connect systems and turn data into action. Above all, it\u2019s technology that simplifies healthcare \u2014 for both those delivering care and those receiving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The promise of innovative technologies<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovative technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are often hailed as silver bullets \u2014 but the conversation at ACHE was more grounded and pragmatic. Rather than replacing humans, the panelists emphasized technology\u2019s role in enhancing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelson referred to AI as \u201cAugmented Intelligence,&#8221; a term that underscores the value of AI as a support system, not a substitute. For example, machine learning tools, like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rldatix.com\/en-nam\/company\/news-press-releases\/rldatix-and-medstar-health-partner-to-improve-patient-safety-using-artificial-intelligence\/\">MedStar Health\u2019s data extraction tool<\/a>, are now being used to sift through thousands of safety event reports, helping organizations spot patterns faster than ever before. These insights can inform decisions that mitigate risk and improve outcomes while reducing staff workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Yuri Fesko, Chief Medical Officer of Quest Diagnostics<\/strong>, cited bio-surveillance as another example. By analyzing patient data, Quest helps public health departments identify high-risk populations \u2014 like those vulnerable to Hepatitis C \u2014 and deliver targeted education and resources that empower these communities with the information they need to take control of their health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovation with intention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One theme resonated from the conversation: healthcare isn\u2019t like other industries. In Silicon Valley, the mantra is \u201cmove fast and break things.\u201d But in healthcare, that mindset doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dr. Boykin Robinson, CEO of Core Clinical Partners<\/strong>, reminded attendees that innovation in healthcare must be both open and cautious. It\u2019s not about resisting change, it\u2019s about being deliberate, ethical and thoughtful in how new technologies are implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right innovations can reduce administrative burden, streamline workflows and accelerate time-to-treatment \u2014 critical improvements in an industry where delays can mean harm. As&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Paul Limburg, Chief Medical Officer of Exact Sciences<\/strong>&nbsp;pointed out, automation can help reduce human error, simplify onerous tasks like documentation and support clinicians in delivering safer, faster care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A more connected future<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What ties all of this together is a vision of connecting operations \u2014 systems that not only share data but learn from it. That means integrating data across patient safety, experience and workforce to uncover not just what went wrong, but also what\u2019s going right. Learning from success is just as important as learning from failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we look to the future, it\u2019s clear that technology will continue to reshape the healthcare landscape. But the goal isn\u2019t disruption for disruption\u2019s sake, it\u2019s sustainable, equitable and intelligent innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Michelson concluded, \u201cWe need smart experiments,\u201d which entails \u2014 careful, strategic steps that help us adapt, learn and shift healthcare toward a safer, more resilient future. \u201cWe have got to make it simple for people to do the right thing.
