The publication of the NHS Quality Strategy 2026 has prompted an important conversation across healthcare. While many of the ambitions set out in the strategy will be familiar to NHS leaders, I believe the focus is now shifting from understanding the strategy itself to considering what it means in practice for provider organisations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was the focus of the first webinar in RLDatix’s Beyond the Strategy: Turning Quality Ambition into Organisational Action<\/em> thought leadership series, where I was joined by Jodie Conlon, Kirsty Edwards, Karen Swinson and Mark Linggood to explore the practical implications of the strategy and reflect on what organisations should be prioritising now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most interesting themes for me was the recognition that the strategy does not necessarily introduce a completely new quality agenda. Safety, effectiveness and experience have long been recognised as the foundations of high-quality care. What feels different is the renewed emphasis on quality as an organisational responsibility, rather than something owned exclusively by governance, quality or compliance teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n During the discussion, we reflected on the volume of information already available within healthcare organisations. From patient safety data and workforce insights to operational performance and patient feedback, there is often no shortage of data. The challenge is bringing that information together in a meaningful way, understanding the relationships between different indicators and using those insights to support improvement. This joined-up view enables organisations to understand quality more holistically and focus improvement where it will have the greatest impact on care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Patient voice was another area that featured prominently throughout the conversation. As quality continues to be viewed through the lenses of safety, effectiveness and experience, there is a growing opportunity for organisations to treat patient and family feedback as a source of quality intelligence rather than simply a measure of satisfaction. We also discussed the value of listening not only to patients, but to frontline staff, whose experiences can often provide some of the clearest indicators of where quality is thriving and where further support may be needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n We also explored what the strategy’s focus on evidence, transparency and accountability could mean in practice. Several panellists reflected on the shift from inspection readiness to continuous readiness, moving beyond preparing for periodic reviews and towards creating an environment where organisations can continuously demonstrate quality, identify risks earlier and evidence improvement over time. Being inspection ready is not just about having meaningful data available; it also means being able to demonstrate that frontline teams are engaged, understand their role in quality improvement and can show how learning is embedded in everyday practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, the discussion ultimately came back to leadership. If quality is becoming the organising principle of NHS-funded care, how do organisations ensure accountability is visible and understood from ward to board? And how do leaders create the conditions for quality improvement to become part of everyday practice rather than a separate organisational initiative? <\/p>\n\n\n\n These questions are particularly important as organisations consider how they move from strategic ambition to operational reality. The strategy places a clear focus on quality as a shared responsibility, but achieving that requires clarity around ownership, accountability and decision-making at every level of the organisation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n My strongest takeaway from the session was that delivering the ambitions of the NHS Quality Strategy is unlikely to depend on new structures alone. Success will require organisations to make better use of the information, expertise and insight they already have, while creating a culture where quality is genuinely everyone’s responsibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n These themes will be explored further in the next webinar in the series, Who Owns Quality? The session will examine one of the most important questions raised by the strategy: if quality is everyone’s responsibility, who is accountable? <\/p>\n\n\n\n As I reflect on the discussion, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the NHS Quality Strategy is not simply about compliance or assurance.
