Multiple studies have shown that bottlenecks in the system can lead to significant delays and complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the recent Patient Flow Conference, I explored the issues surrounding patient flow and transport through a customer story and wanted to share our insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding the Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Delays in Discharge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most significant challenges in patient flow is delays in discharge. These delays can occur for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Assessing post-acute care needs<\/strong>: Evaluating what kind of care a patient will need after discharge is often time-consuming.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coordinating care and support<\/strong>: Organising and arranging the necessary care and support services can be complex and slow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discharge procedures<\/strong>: The actual process of organising transport and ensuring all paperwork is complete can create additional delays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These delays not only impact the hospital\u2019s ability to manage its beds effectively but also result in poorer health outcomes for patients and increased costs for the healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transfer Delays<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transfer delays, whether within the hospital or external facilities, also pose significant challenges. These delays can lead to unnecessary overnight stays, increased stress for patients, and a strain on hospital resources. Studies have shown that 10% of non-emergency journeys remain unfilled, highlighting inefficiencies in the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sheffield Teaching Hospital \u2013 Customer story<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield Teaching Hospital provides a pertinent example of the complexities involved in managing patient flow and transport. With five sites in a small geographical area and a specialist centre for Accident and Emergency (A&amp;E) at one site, the hospital faces unique challenges. Some of the issues they have encountered include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12-hour trolley breaches in A&amp;E.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moving patients to the correct speciality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unnecessary overnight stays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing a major incident.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Little resilience with only 2 regular suppliers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding the need for better management of providers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Standard processes that are slow, often taking up to six months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High volume of patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordination between finance, procurement and operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By implementing Transport Marketplace, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has seen numerous benefits and improvements such as reduced length of sage and enhanced bed capacity and flow across the trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strategies for Improvement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Role of Non-Emergency Patient Transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-emergency patient transport is a vital component of patient flow.
