RLDatix responds to Care Quality Commission State of Care report 2024

Responding to the Care Quality Commission annual State of Care report 2024 Dr Darren Kilroy, Medical Director at RLDatix said:

“The State of Care report highlights that there is more work to do to support staff to understand the benefits of reporting all patient safety incidents. Addressing cultural challenges around the response and management of patient safety events would support this.

“The normalising of conditions that are known to lead to an increased risk of harm, is an area for improvement. By taking a ‘report all’ approach, and proactively supporting staff to use surveillance data to tell them when they are running a risk previously learnt about through investigation, that organisations can anticipate and prevent future harm.

“The report highlights that some incidents go unreported because they are seen as ‘common place’ for clinical staff or do not trigger a patient safety event locally. However, the logging and reporting of all events allows organisations to build up a rich picture of patient risk and has the benefit of supporting patient experience and enabling staff to see where changes could be made to prevent future harm.

“To support the healthcare system and maximise learning from patient safety events we are developing new methods of surveillance and problem-sensing that can support organisations to predict incidents and prompt action based on learning from previous investigations, helping prevent future harm in the moment.”
