Turning Awareness into Action: Expanding Sexual Assault and DV Support Hospital-Wide

Share this Insight:

Summary

Teagan Briant identified an opportunity to improve access to support for those experiencing sexual assault or domestic violence. New updated posters were first placed in the Emergency Department (ED) by the hospital IDVA, providing discreet information and contact details for support services. After a Datix report showed that a young person had attended ED and made the decision to talk to staff as a result of these posters, Teagan acted to share the learning and ensure the posters were placed across the hospital. This simple change has made support more visible, accessible and immediate

The Challenge

Before the posters were introduced, patients and visitors often did not know where to turn for help with sexual assault or domestic violence. There was a need for discreet, accessible information so that individuals could seek support without having to disclose directly to staff. Staff also needed a consistent and clear resource to use when responding to disclosures of abuse.

The Solution

The hospital IDVA placed posters in ED with clear contact details for Haven services and other specialist support. Following a positive Datix report that validated the effectiveness of the posters, Teagan expanded the initiative across wards, outpatient areas and waiting rooms. The project was supported by the Patient Safety team, ED staff, safeguarding leads and communications to ensure messages were consistent. Datix was used to record the incident and share the learning widely within the organisation.

Results & Next Steps

The posters directly prompted a vulnerable young person to seek help, leading to immediate safeguarding, a forensic assessment and referral to Childrenโ€™s Social Care. Staff have reported feeling more confident in signposting support, with informal feedback showing the posters have increased awareness and reassurance. Posters are now displayed across the hospital in inpatient, outpatient and high-footfall areas. Departments are exploring tailored versions for their settings and discussions are underway to share the approach with partner organisations. Datix will continue to be used to capture and share learning.
